Dr. LeRoy R. Perry, Jr., DC, C. Ped., DABCO, is notable for having been the first Doctor of Chiropractic [2] to become an Olympic team physician[3]
. He is also to be honored as a sports Chiropractic pioneer, responsible for opening the doors that allowed others to become Olympic Team Doctors.
Through a connection with Tracy Sundlund, coach for the 12 member Antigua team, [4] he first attended the Olympic games as a member of the team of the small island nation [5], in Montreal, Canada, in 1976. He later attended the 1980 Olympic Winter Games as a member of the US Olympic Bobsled Team, and was accredited by the UK [4], and then in Los Angeles in 1984 with the Venezuelan team as assistant to Dr. Luis Valera and with the Italian team [4]; in 1988 in Seoul, Korea he appeared again with the team of Antigua; and, finally at the Games in Barcelona, Spain in 1992, as one of the Team Doctors for the Russian Federation[6].
Biography
Dr. Perry, who was a 1972 graduate of the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, has numerous patents to his name for inventions like the "Orthopod", and other devices in the health care field.
In 1979 he appeared with Dwight Stones and others, on the "Tomorrow Show", hosted by Tom Snyder [7], where Mr. Stones gave him credit for having won his Gold medal. Dr. Perry had no way to know this, but that statement forever killed his chances of representing the US at the Olympic Games. Later that year, in a conversation with Dr Stephen Press, Dr.Irving Dardik (then Chairman of the USOC Sports medicine committee) told Dr. Press that this (and a rally in Texas [5], allegedly funded by Perry for the US Olympians organization) was "what had most angered the USOC officials", and thus Dr. Press was forced to give another's name to Dardik, and it was believed that much of Perry's work was founded on that of George Goodheart, of Detroit, and thus Goodheart became the first US team DC [2]. Regardless, it was Dr. Perry's work, and this sacrifice (to bring Chiropractic to the attention of the USOC) that resulted in the ability of others to go to the Olympic Games.
