Dr. Stephen J Press, DC, PhD, CCSP, FACSM, FICC, ICCSP, FRCC is an American chiropractor. He was born in 1947 to Howard and Renée Press (née Graf) in Bronx, New York. Dr. Press is 2nd Cousin to Calvin Klein [2], and descendant of the composer Jacques Offenbach [2].
Dr. Press organized the first official meeting between the USOC and the ACA Sports Council, which resulted in sending the first Chiropractor to the Olympic Games in 1980 [3]. In 1987, one year before the World Federation of Chiropractic [4]; he founded the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic, [1][5] [6] [7][8] [9] [10] [11][12] [13][14] and the International Academy of Olympic Chiropractic Officers [15], and was appointed by the Chairman of the USSR State Sports Committee to serve as Chief Physician [16] [16] [17] for the 1992 - XVI Winter Olympic Games, in Albertville, France. In 1990, the Board of directors of the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic, awarded him the "FICS' Gold Medal", "the highest award the profession can give to a Sports Chiropractor, Internationally". [18] He is currently in private practice in Englewood, New Jersey and in 2000 was appointed to the consulting chiropractic staff at Preakness Healthcare Center (formerly Preakness Hospital). Biography
Dr. Press received his Bachelors Degree in biology from Thomas Edison State College [22] [23] and obtained his Doctor of Chiropractic degree, Magna Cum Laude from Palmer College of Chiropractic in 1978. [24] He received a PhD in Sports Medicine, from Intercontinental University, Moscow, in 2006. He received his Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician certification [25] and became the first and only [26] Chiropractor to be named [27] [28] Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine in 1983. [29][30] Then in 1981 he went to the UK to participate in the "Team Physician's course" of the International Federation of Sports Medicine, (FIMS) [31]. He remains the only DC to have completed this course.
In 1970 he joined the City of Englewood, NJ Auxiliary Police, and was named Chief [28] under then Mayor Walter Taylor in 1977. He was simultaneously a member of the Englewood Volunteer Ambulance Corps, [28] until he left to finish Chiropractic school. In 1982, Dr. Press ran unsuccessfully for Councilman-at-large, losing to Eddie Haden, Esq., then the running mate of Congressman Steve Rothman, who was elected Mayor, in the City of Englewood [28]. He had two children; Robert M. Press, MS, DC, and Alyssa N. Press, BA (Fine Arts), by his former wife Janice Feldman. He is currently happily married to the former Olga Petrovna Serova, MD (Pediatrics, St. Petersburg, Russia), RN, since 2004.
Honors and Awards
In 1990, the Minister of Sport of the USSR, awarded Dr. Press a gold medal entitled "Coach of Champions" (Тренер Побидителы), from the Soviet Sports Committee, for service in his successful treatment of Yekaterina Gordeeva.
In 1991, upon completing his term as the 1st President of the FICS, FICS' Board awarded him the first FICS' Gold Medal, originally intended for Juan Antonio Samaranch, and designated the "highest Award that can be bestowed upon a Sports Chiropractor, Internationally".
In 2011, at the World Congress of Chiropractic in Rio de Janeiro, the Executive Committee of the FICS, presented Dr. Press with a FICS' Past President's Medal [4]. And, then later in the same day, awarded him the "FICS's Founder's Award".[8][9]
In 2015, at the World Congress of Chiropractic and FICS Congress in Athens, Greece, Dr. Press was invited to apply for recognition as Fellow of the Royal College of Chiropractors (UK). By June 17, the Council had awarded him the "post-nominal letters " FRCC".
Professional Career
- 1979 - He forged the relationship with the US Olympic Committee [7] which resulted in the creation of the Volunteer Chiropractors Program at the US Olympic Training Center, and thus the sending of Chiropractic doctors to the Olympic Games with the USOC.

- 1987 - He Founded [5][11] the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic (FICS) and was elected its first President, [32] [33] [34] [35]. He also was selected in that same year (June 18) to be the first Doctor of Chiropractic to present a paper at the United States Olympic Academy XI, held at Indiana University. [36] [27] [37].
- 1988 - He lead a delegation of chiropractors to Annaba, Algeria to provide services at the African Championships in Athletics [38] [39] Later in the same year he took a group of chiropractors to Moscow, to study at the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism (RSUPES&T). [40] [41] While in Moscow, Dr. Press was asked to treat the (now) two-time Olympic Gold medal figure skater Yekaterina Gordeeva. [42]
- 1990 - Together with the Chief Neurologist of Moscow, Dr. Anatoly Fedin, he opened the "Soviet-American Chiropractic Center" at the 2000 bed Pirogov Institute. Together they created the "Faculty of Chiropractic" at the facility. [43] [44] In May, he was invited as a guest speaker at the European Chiropractic Union general assembly in Avignon, France, on technology in Chiropractic [45].
- At a meeting in Washington, DC, Dr. Press was unanimously elected to the office of Secretary-general of the World Fitness Federation, [46] [47] which sent a delegation to the World Health Organization later that year.
- Invited by the Venezuelan government at the auspices of Dr. Luis Valera, of Caracas, Dr. Press was asked to speak at the Headquarters of the Venezuelan National Guard, called EFOFAC, to a delegation of the medical corps of the armed Forces of Venezuela, as well as to the Medical Corps of MARAVEN the National Petroleum Company. During the trip, he met with the then Sports Minister of Venezuela, Sra. Flor Isava-Fonseca, then a member of the IOC executive, and discussed the future recognition of the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic, by the International Olympic Committee. - 1991 - He was appointed by Nicholai Ivanovich Rusak, Chairman, State Sports Committee of the USSR, to the post of Chief Physician of the USSR Winter Olympic team, then known as the "Unified Team". XVIth Winter Olympic Games, Albertville, France. [16] [51] [52] [53]. This is notable for two main reasons: a.- that an American Chiropractic Doctor was chosen as Chief Physician for the USSR; and b.- that as a result of the dissolution of the USSR, he was a Doctor serving 6 Countries [54] in one Olympic games.
- 1993 - Dr. Press served as Team Physician for the US National Tae Kwon Do Team, the World Tae Kwon Do championships, held at Madison Square Garden in New York City. During the games he treated athletes from Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, Ireland, Israel, Egypt, Russia, and Jordan among others. One of his patients, American fly weight Hyon Lee [55], won a Bronze Medal with a fracture of the metacarpal. While at the stadium, he met with H. E. Un-Yong Kim, President, and Founder [56] of the World Taekwondo Federation. [57]
- 1998 - Dr. Press was appointed by the Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Assoc. of Recognized Int'l Sports Federations (ARISF) [58] "recognized" International Roller Sports Federation[59] to Chair their "Sport Science Commission" (previously called the Medical Commission).[5] [60][61] [62]
- 1999 - As Chairman of the FIRS medical commission, Dr. Press was invited to Lausanne, Switzerland to participate as a member of their delegation in the Declaration of Lausanne, which created the World Anti-Doping Agency. [63] [64]
- 2000 - Dr. Press was co-opted by H.E., Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Pres. of the Republic of Kalmykia, and of FIDE (World Chess Federation) to create their new Medical Commission (in the post of Vice-Chairman). [34] [65] [66] On the untimely death of Chairman, Pedro Barrera, MD [67], he became "Acting Chairman", [68]until the post was assumed by Jana Bellin, MD. the entire concept of requiring Doping tests in Chess became a cause celebre, and was covered in the media. - 2008 - After the Rita/Katrina disaster, Dr. Press volunteered for deployment to the disaster area through the Medical Reserve Corps of the US Public Health Service, and was sent to a shelter in Big Sandy, TX, where he served as shelter physician, running a team of LPN's, RN's and EMT's for over 800 refugees. - Dr. Press has appeared as a guest authority in his profession on US television [73] [74] [75] and Radio [76] [77] on numerous occasions. He has lectured on Chiropractic subjects, in Mexico [78] [79],Turkey, Russia, Algeria, France [80] [81], and Venezuela, and in several states of the US. He was "distinguished lecturer" at the United States Olympic Academy XI, at Indiana University, in 1987 [82], among many others.
