The General Chiropractic Council is the statutory governmental body responsible for the regulation of chiropractic in the United Kingdom.[1]
It was established by the Chiropractors Act 1994, which originated in a Private Members Bill promoted by David Lidington[2], to protect the public by regulating chiropractors, set standards for professional education, practice and conduct and to ensure the development of the chiropractic profession.[1]
It is scrutinised by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence.[3]
The General Chiropractic Council provides a searchable database of registered chiropractors.
Organisation
The GCC has a general council, four statutory committees and twelve staff. The general council is formed of seven non-chiropractors and seven chiropractors and meets four times a year. Each member serves for 3 or 4 years. The four statutory committees are:
- The Education Committee
- The Investigating Committee
- The Health Committee
- The Professional Conduct Committee[4]
