Medhat Alattar, MD, MS, DC, FICA was born in Cairo, Egypt where he earned his medical degree from Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine[1] in 1980 and received his training in Orthopedic surgery at Menchyat el Bakry Hospital[2] in Heliopolis. In 1983 he participated as a co-investigator in the first double blind Low Back Pain study between ICA sponsored doctors of chiropractor and Egyptian medical doctors in Cairo, Egypt [3] Chiropractic at that time was not known or recognized in Egypt. As a result in 1984, Dr. Alattar accepted a full time teaching faculty position at Life University. and was granted a scholarship to study chiropractic as part time student. Dr. Alattar graduated in 1987 to become the first Egyptian born Medical Doctor to earn a chiropractic degree[4].

He is notable as one of a handful of Orthopedic surgeons in the World to become a leading researcher investigating the benefits of Chiropractic care.

Biography

For over a decade Dr. Alattar played a strong role in introducing chiropractic to several countries through his work as Dean of international programs at Life University [5] and the Executive Director of Life Foundation Inc. a 501 (C) (3), IRS approved, non-profit organization [7]. (1991-2002). Dr. Alattar lectured about Chiropractic, attended international conferences, scientific seminars, and special meetings with top officials to promote chiropractic in the following countries: Argentina [5]., Brazil[6].,Peru [4]. Cost Rica[7]. Guatemala[4]. Venezuela[4]. Haiti[8].,Mexico[9],Indonesia[4], Malaysia[4],Japan[10],India[4], Australia[11], the Philippines[12], Egypt[13], Kuwait[14]. Kenya[4], Senegal[4],Russia [15]. Switzerland)[16].,England[11], France [17], Spain[18], Italy [19], The Netherlands[20], Finland [21].and China[22].

In the early nineties he worked for four years to foster exchange programs with universities in East Africa (especially Kenya)[4], supervised and managed the Life Foundation’s Mobile clinic in Costa Rica[4]. He worked with the Costa Rican officials and with the Chiropractors in Costa Rica to established the profession, and participated in several consultations that resulted in legalizing chiropractic in the country[7].In 1994 and for three years he supervised Life University's joint research clinic with the Neurology department of his Alma mater Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt[23].He also managed the staff and Life University’s Research and Service clinics in Beijing, China [24]. Taegu, South Korea[25]. Budapest, Hungary[26] and San Jose, Costa Rica[27].

Dr. Alattar played an instrumental role in establishing a working relationship with the World Health Organization through his participation in the Low Back Pain Initiative[20], the Tobacco Free Initiative [28]. and as a chiropractic delegate for over ten years to the World Health Assemblies (1992-2003)[16]. He served as an expert for the World Health Organization Low Back Initiative (1992-97)[11],Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI)& Frame Work Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) meetings (1997-2001)[29]. He organized with WHO and PAHO the first Pan American NGOs’s Convention in support of the WHO/TFI in the Pan American Region that was held at Life University campus in Marietta, Georgia in April 2001. He presented the “Chiropractic Spinal Hygiene” concepts in the Geneva Social Summit 2000 [30]. Dr. Alattar founded the Egyptian Chiropractic Association in 1990[31]. Dr. Alattar served the NBCE‘s pathology testing committee as an independent contractor for over ten years[32]. He received several honors and awards including “ The Excellence in International Relation Award" from the International Chiropractor's Association”[33]. He is a Fellow of the International Chiropractor's Association [34] and currently a member of the WFC’s Public Health Committee[35]

In 2003, after he joined Palmer Chiropractic College he coordinated Palmer's effort with WFC to continue the anti-tobacco campaign.

Sports Chiropractic

  • 1994-2002 - Dean of the International Programs of LU [4] and Supervisor of the International Sports Programs [4].
  • 1997 - Head of the chiropractic Team of the Costa Rican Olympic Athletes during the Central American Games in Honduras [7].
  • 1998 - Head of the chiropractic Team of the Costa Rican Olympic Athletes during the Caribbean/ Central American Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela [7].
  • 1997-2002 he worked with, and visited several times the Olympic Solidarity headquarters, Lausanne, Switzerland to negotiate and submit Life University’s DELPP application to become a Training Center for Olympic Coaches. [36].
  • 1998 - he worked as a Researcher and Coordinator of Life University’s joint research with the Finish Olympic Committee to evaluate the effects of Jet Lag in preparation for the Sydney Olympics [21].
  • 2000 - Coordinator of Life University’s chiropractic team to the 2000 Australia World Cup Swim events [37] and the Life University's Sports Chiropractic teams during the Sydney Olympics [37]
